Christmas Season in Fulfillment: A Behind-the-Scenes Look

We take you behind the scenes for a glimpse into daily fulfillment life before and during the holiday season.

Christmas Season in Fulfillment: A Behind-the-Scenes Look

What does the Christmas season mean for us in the fulfillment industry?

For us, the Christmas season comes with a lot of complex challenges and problems you need to know how to solve. Let us take you behind the scenes, into our warehouses, where we'll give you a few insights into the daily fulfillment routine before and during the Christmas rush.

Expanding storage capacity:

Many customers expand their storage capacity in preparation for the Christmas season to make sure enough products are available and orders can be processed on time. Imagine the frustration if your bestseller suddenly went out of stock.

Customer communication:

Clear communication with customers is decisive for preventing potential delays or shortages. Transparency around shipping times, return options, and customer service helps maintain customer satisfaction. Our team works hand in hand with our partners and customers every day to keep complications to a minimum.

Stress factor:

The work atmosphere can get more stressful during the Christmas season as demand for faster shipping times and higher accuracy rises. It's important to make sure staff are well-trained and properly supported to handle the stress. Designing processes and workflows to be as efficient and smooth as possible also helps. Depending on demand, it may be necessary to bring in temporary staff to manage the increased workload and stress during the Christmas season.

Returns:

In some industries, there tend to be more returns during the Christmas season as gifts are returned or exchanged. To counter this, you can implement clear return policies and an efficient returns process.

Financial perspective:

As a rule, the fulfillment industry has seen significant revenue growth during the Christmas season, as many companies ramp up product shipments and stock up on inventory to meet rising demand.

Overall, the Christmas season in the fulfillment industry requires careful planning to meet rising demands while keeping the work environment pleasant for staff.

Interesting facts and figures from the Christmas season

As you can see in the stats, supplements were shipped most often. Cosmetics came in close behind, followed by fashion. The lion's share is shipped by leading DTC brands, but we also have many smaller companies with strong growth potential that show big growth in the run-up to Christmas.

Another fact we picked up from our analysis: most returns happen in fashion. Mostly due to fit issues or wrong sizes.

Zenrush® is becoming more and more popular with customers. There are many reasons for that — first off, the typical Christmas time pressure of pulling all the gifts together. Once the gift is wrapped and ready, the stress is gone and you just have to hand it over. In some surrounding regions there are also delivery problems due to the onset of winter. Weather conditions like ice or snow can cause delays you need to factor in. Many online shops also offer special promotions and discounts during the Christmas season, tempting end customers to treat themselves to faster shipping too.

How important is shipping during this time?

Who hasn't been in the situation of miscalculating — ordering something a few days before the holidays only to have it arrive just before New Year's Eve? You end up stammering in front of the family on the most important evening: "Looks like Santa forgot about you." A very stressful and especially awkward situation that's worth avoiding at all costs. Sadly, many companies still don't offer faster shipping options, and every year people complain about the carriers — but the company's reputation takes a hit too. A big step would be for companies to offer something like "next-day delivery," or at least clearly communicate a precise delivery window of 3 to 5 business days for standard shipping right in the shop. That would give end customers a confident feeling at the end of their shopping trip when they get to checkout. They'd order, see it'll arrive the day after tomorrow or within a week, and be reassured before heading home to their family.

A little Christmas tale

Once upon a time in a small town, just before Christmas. A cozy little shipping center called "Happy Parcels" was bustling with activity. The staff were busy wrapping gifts and making sure they'd reach their destinations on time.

In the middle of all the excitement sat a little parcel named Zenny. Zenny was no ordinary parcel — she was special. Her exterior was wrapped in sparkling Christmas paper, and a mint green ribbon decorated her middle. But what made Zenny special was what was inside. She held the most heartfelt wish of a little girl named Mia.

Mia had wished so dearly that her grandma, who lived far away, could be with her family for Christmas. And so this special wish ended up in Zenny, the little parcel at the Happy Parcels shipping center.

The staff at Happy Parcels knew how important this wish was for Mia. Everyone who came in contact with Zenny felt the Christmas magic radiating from her. The team decided to take extra care of Zenny to make sure she arrived safely and on time at Mia and her grandma's.

The days went by, and the excitement at the shipping center grew. Zenny was carefully packed by a friendly worker named Nikolas. He added extra padding around Zenny to make sure she'd survive the journey unscathed. Nikolas also slipped a small note into the parcel: "For Mia and her grandma – a very special gift from Happy Parcels."

Since shipping Zenny was top priority, she was sent with Zenrush®. She was loaded up with lots of other parcels, and off the journey went.

Late in the evening, Zenny finally reached Mia's house. On the morning before Christmas, Mia found Zenny on her doorstep. With sparkling eyes and a pounding heart, she opened the sparkling Christmas paper. As she untied the mint green ribbon, Zenny's interior glowed back at her.

In that moment, Mia's grandma walked through the door too. The surprise and joy in her eyes mirrored Mia's. The little family hugged tightly, and Zenny, the special parcel, had fulfilled her purpose — bringing love and togetherness to Christmas.

And so ends the story of the little parcel that didn't just carry a gift, but also the magic of Christmas and the meaning of love and togetherness. Merry Christmas!
